The life of young Rob J. Cole changes the day he becomes orphaned and discovers that he possesses an extraordinary gift in his hands: he can predict death. Adopted as an apprentice by a barber-surgeon, Rob travels across England discovering life, discipline, and a curiosity to learn. At nineteen, a Jewish doctor tells him about distant Persia, where there is a medical school run by the greatest doctor of the time: Avicenna.
Rob sets off on an adventure, determined to cross half the world to become a doctor. While traveling in a caravan through the desert, he meets Mary, a Scottish girl who will make him remember his origins and shape his future plans.
Nothing will be easy for Rob in Isfahan, neither pretending to be Jewish to be allowed to study nor his relationship with the Shah, who becomes obsessed with his friendship. He soon becomes a star student of Avicenna, but a plague, war, and a despotic king will test Rob’s life. Only friendship, his vocation, and love will push him to survive.
